How do different health plans compare?

There are a variety of affordable health plans available that will meet your individual needs. Being familiar with the following types of plans will help you select the coverage that's right for you.

What are the different types of health insurance?
  • individual health insurance - for individuals who are not part of a group
  • family health insurance - takes into account the needs of each individual family member
  • Medicare supplemental insurance (Medigap) - fills in the gaps of existing Medicare coverage
  • small business health insurance - plans for employers with 2-50 employees
  • group health insurance - plans for groups or organizations
  • short term health insurance - coverage for those who need a temporary health plan
  • dental insurance - helps pay for dental expenses
  • travel insurance - provides coverage while traveling, including medical & travel related expenses
How do the different types of insurance plans compare?
  • HMO - Health Maintenance Organization. You select a primary care doctor within the HMO's network who gives you referrals when you want to see a specialist.

  • PPO - Preferred Provider Organization. You can see specialists without having to get a referral. Lower co-payments if you see specialists within your network.

  • Indemnity Plan (also known as Fee-for-Service) - You pay a deductible and your insurance company pays the remainder of the bill. Indemnity plans were common many years ago, but they're not often available now.

  • POS - Point-of-Service. You can either use the plan like an HMO by seeing your primary care doctor, or you can use it like an Indemnity Plan by seeing doctors outside your network but paying a higher percentage of the bill.

  • HSA - Health Savings Account. Pretax savings accounts intended for medical expenses. HSAs aren't really a type of health care plan, but they're savings plans that give you a tax benefit. Money is deposited before taxes are taken out, and the funds can be taken out tax-free when used for medical expenses.
